Introduction to E.S. Tibet and Kunpan Cultural School
Educational Support Tibet (E.S. Tibet) is a 10 year-old non-profit organisation, registered in Switzerland, which funds the Kunpan Cultural School in Dharamsala, northern India. This school offers Tibetan adult refugees 2 years of further education in English, Chinese and Computing. These students will have already studied for 3-5 years at one of the other refugee schools in India, but generally will not have received any formal qualifications in the subjects studied. At Kunpan Cultural School, the students work towards the Cambridge University English Tests.

The primary aim of both the organisation and the school is to improve the students’ future employment prospects, by educating them to a level that they very often do not have access to in Tibet, for geographical or financial reasons. They have risked their lives trekking across the Himalayas to come to India, where they can live safely and freely among the Tibetan exile community. Whilst the life they can have here is safe and free, it is also transient and a long way away from their families. For this reason, one of our other main aims is to promote the self-confidence and self-belief of our students by creating a fun, caring and family atmosphere in the school, which is rooted in a system of mutual respect and goodwill between students and teachers.

80% of our previous students have successfully found employment back in Tibet – some as translators for NGOs or tourist guides; others set up a school, and a travel agency.
